View from the "Saux Indian Look Out"
Description :
Billion of years ago the mountains here were more than 18,000 feet high and at least as high as today's Swiss Alps. Over millions of years the mountains were worn down. During the "Glacial Ages" ice over 5000 meters thick covered much of North American and the northern hemisphere. The glaciers passed over this place. Glaciers smoothed and polished the surface as it is seen today. Primative people found copper. It has been said that copper from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan was carried to China across the "land bridge" between Alaska and Asia. In the early 1800's prospectors found gold in the Kona Hills. This area is also the beginning of the "iron range" in North America. "Kona Dolomite" is a rock that shows "pink." Pink is the result of the iron content and thus the area is the only place on earth where you will find "Kona Dolomite."
Geologists say Kona Hills is the best place on earth to easily examine "blue green algae," also known as "stromatolites" and "cyano bacteria." All are names attributed to the "first life on earth." Sharks Bay, Australia, has interesting stomatolites but nothing compares to the exposed wall of it in Kona Hills, Marquette, Michigan, USA.
