Gold was trench mined by pick and shovel here in the 1840s and earlier. Copper is also present. From the north and west section corner on this property surveyers marked a line westward and days later discovered "iron ore" in 1844. This opened the iron mining industry in the United States. Dolomite with an influence of iron is found in Kona Hills. It is known as "Kona Dolomite." Its shades of pink color are due to its iron content. The Upper Peninsula of Michigan is the only place in the world where Kona Dolomite is found.
